Water’s Dirty Little Secret: Boil Water Orders

Many people living in the US today are under water boil orders and cannot drink their own water. In the month of August alone, 15 states had water boil orders in at least one city, some having as many as 8 different cities in one state that cannot drink their home water due to contaminants.

What is a Boil Water Order?

A boil water order is an advisory or directive given by government or health authorities when a community’s drinking water is, or could be, contaminated by pathogens.

Under a boil water advisory, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that water be brought to a rolling boil for one minute before it is consumed in order to kill protozoa, bacteria and viruses. This also includes water for washing fresh fruits and vegetables, brushing and rinsing your teeth and making ice.

If the water boil order is not followed properly your family can be at risk for gastrointestinal illness (for example, diarrhea, vomiting, cramps), hepatitis, meningitis, even reproductive problems, and neurological disorders.

What Causes This Water Contamination?

The water in your home, on your street, in your community can become contaminated in any number of ways; most commonly by the five listed below.

  • Naturally occurring chemicals and minerals (for example, arsenic, radon, uranium)
  • Local land use practices (fertilizers, pesticides, livestock, concentrated animal feeding operations)
  • Sewer overflows
  • Malfunctioning wastewater treatment systems (for example, nearby septic systems
  • Water pipe maintenance or water pressure problems

How Can You Avoid Water Contamination In A Water Boil Order?

The answer to that is quite simple; take all precautions ordered by your local health authorities and boil water as directed. Also, be prepared with a home filtration system. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that Filtration can be used as a pathogen reduction method against most microorganisms.

A whole house filtration system offers several different types of systems that can benefit your health and the health of your family.

Filter systems are available with ceramic filters that remove pathogens down to the 0.2–0.3 micrometer range. Some of the ceramic filters also utilize activated charcoal filtering. A charcoal filtration system absorbs many compounds, including the toxic compounds that can cause taste and odors.

Puriteam.com offers a wide variety of home filtration systems that can help you to avoid so many of these natural and chemical contaminants that can harm you and your family avoid illnesses caused by poor water quality. Whether you are in a boil water order or not, having clean pure water to drink is essential to life.
