Protozoan Organisms

Certain harmful protozoa are resistant to chlorination. This fact is a large concern for the water treatment industry and government health agencies. It’s also one of the reasons it’s important to further filter water entering your home. You can use simple under sink water filters or, if you prefer, counter top water filters. Another option to add to this is using a shower water filter to further ensure the safety of the water that could possible affect your family’s health.

Two dangerous protozoa microorganisms are giardia lamblia and cryptiopsoridium. Both can enter drinking water sources through the contamination of animal fecal matter. Protozoa are hardy and are designed to survive in water. They can create a protective covering for themselves and can remain in a resting stage called a cyst. This cyst is what can shield them from disinfection procedures. Even in this resting stage they continue to act as powerful pathogens.

Some scientists presume that protozoan cysts have always been present in water and that humans used to have a higher immunity to them as compared to now. Because of improvements in sanitation most have low immunity, so exposure to these microorganisms can make people even more vulnerable when they are in unsanitary conditions. The most severe epidemic happened in 1993 in Wisconsin when 400,000 people were infected by cryptosporidium. The outbreak caused more than 60 deaths.

When giardia lamblia and cryptosporidium enter the small intestine and, in effect ‘hatch’, they cause flu-like symptoms such as severe diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever. Most people recover from these types of infections within a week. It becomes especially dangerous and even fatal when people with low or immature immune systems are exposed such as aids patients, children and the elderly.

There is no current disinfection technique that can remove these microorganisms from water. They must be filtered out using straining units that have a pore size of 1 micron or less. UV light will also damage their DNA and render them harmless. To keep your drinking water free of pathogens, use a counter top water filter or an under sink water filter. Sometimes young children like to play in bathwater. It might be a good idea to use a shower water filter to ensure that any water they may ingest is safe.

Puriteam.com has a selection of counter top water filters and under sink water filters and that remove 99.99% of protozoan cysts.
