Watering has to be done properly in order to keep a lawn green and healthy. Failure to water your lawn properly often results in wilting and brown spots. One of the most important keys to a healthy lawn is proper water management. Listed below are things you need to remember as you implement your lawn watering strategy:

Type of soil

The watering strategy and schedule you use will largely depend on the climate you live in and the type of soil you have, as well as the type of grass you are growing. There are typically three kinds of soil; clay, loamy and sandy. Clay soil usually doesn’t need as much water as loamy soil, while sandy usually needs more water than loamy soil. Whatever your soil type is you can probably enhance it by periodically adding organic matter like manure, grass clippings and compost. Everything you do should be done in an environmentally sound way.

Amount of water

Some experts claim that your lawn needs about 1 inch of water each week during the growing season. Obviously, rain water is the ideal water, but you must use your other watering resources to make sure you meet the watering needs of your lawn. The climate you live in will determine if you need more or less than the suggested 1 inch per week.

When to water

Usually, morning or earlier in the day is the optimal time for watering your lawn. Early evening is also a good time. Watering in the middle of the day often results in a large amount of evaporation and leaving the grass nutrient deficient. A light evening or night time watering schedule sometimes encourages fungus, mold and various diseases.

Water coverage

Early in the season you need to take special notice of the difficult to reach areas such as the edges and corners. Although watering these areas often works best by hand, not everyone has a lot of time to do manual watering. For this reason, you may need to get creative in how you arrange your sprinkling system. For those with sprinkling systems that are plumbed into the yard that are not reaching all of the spots, a long hose with a sprinkler may need to be employed for supplemental watering.

Deep vs. frequent watering

A good long deep watering is superior to a short but frequent watering schedule. This is because you ideally want to let the water soak at least 6 to 8 inches deep down into the soil. This will result in grass roots growing deeper into the soil enabling your grass to become much more drought tolerant.

Drought preparation

When you are aware that high temperatures and a long dry spell is on the way with a potential of a drought, it is best to allow the grass to grow longer than normal. When you do cut the lawn, be sure to raise the deck of the lawn mower, allowing the longer grass to shade itself. By doing so, your grass should be able to weather the drought if you have previously fed the lawn and fertilized it properly during the spring and early summer periods.

Sprinkling and irrigation systems

Removes harmful chlorine from garden water

There are three general types of sprinklers; impact sprinklers, oscillating sprinklers and traveling sprinklers. Everyone has their own preference when it comes to watering methods. It is best to experiment and find out which system seems to work best for your particular needs.

Impact sprinklers generally provide an even watering pattern and have the ability to cover large areas if you have good water pressure. For large lawns, they can be plumbed into a ground watering system. With oscillating sprinklers, water comes from an arm as it rotates back and forth in an arch across the area. This method waters your lawn in a rectangular pattern and is a great solution for small lawns that don’t have an impact sprinkling system installed.

Oscillating sprinklers also provide a solution for areas of the lawn that are not being adequately reached by the impact sprinklers. Many people feel that traveling sprinklers have a good uniform distribution pattern which is created by a head that revolves and is attached to a little tractor. It disperses water in a circular pattern.

Automated Watering systems

Automated irrigation systems are a good option for watering lawns. They will save you time and money. They also help you to maintaining consistency in the watering schedule.

Remember, it is better to underwater than overwater a lawn. Generally, the best times to water are in the early morning and early evening. By remembering these tips, you can greatly increase your success in growing a lush green lawn.

Summer is nearly here, and many fortunate people are preparing their back-yard for that lovely above ground swimming pool. The kids and adults alike enjoy taking a swim and playing when those temperatures soar above comfortable levels. The pool is a relaxing and wonderful way to cool off.

Many who have had a pool know that a lot goes into the pool to keep the water clean and healthy. The pool is not going to function correctly if it is not kept clean and hygienically safe. In order for your pool to look inviting cleanliness is the answer. It will take some effort to keep the pool clean and safe but the effort that goes into this chore is well worth it in the end. Your pool should be ready to use at any time.

All of the non-visual sediment, insects, organisms and bacteria are far more harmful then things such as leaves and dirt in the pool water. Things that are blown into pool water can be easily removed with the pool vacuum. It is what is not seen that needs more attention.

One must make sure that the water in the pool as a correct pH balance. The pool water will not be clear and clean without the correct chemical balance. Pool supply companies have what is called chlorine tablets or sticks to use on a regular basis in the pool water. Invest in a pool chemical kit in order to test the water to make sure there is just the right balance of chemicals. This is not a complicated process and is very easy to do, and very necessary. Do not let debris such as leaves linger because they will make the pool very dirty the longer they are in the water. It is a good idea to keep a cover on the pool when it is not in use. This will help to keep debris from falling into the water.

In order to test and balance the chemical levels in the water one will need to purchase an HTH test kit. This will measure pH, chlorine, total chlorine, calcium alkaline, and cyanotic acid. If one does not make sure that the water is balanced correctly every day the chemicals can corrode, damage pool equipment and present a buildup of scale, a chalky substance that causes deposits on the pool walls and floor. Balancing these chemicals will also assure that the water is sanitized and clean.

When one is testing their pool water, it should be done daily. The levels should have a pH of 7.2-7.6, free chlorine should be 1-PPM, and alkaline should be 60-120 PPM, and calcium 200-500 PPM. At least twice during the year the owner should check cyanotic acid at least 20-25 PPM, and stabilizer should not exceed 100 PPM. Appropriate levels help keep your pool free of many pathogens, as well as organic matter such as algae.

Many pool owners have found that by purchasing an automatic pool cleaner, it will help to reduce sediment in the water. This is really a valuable tool and will save the pool owner much time and hassle. If money is of no object one can hire a pool person to maintain and keep the chemicals balanced and debris out of the pool.

If one has an above ground pool and is not crazy about using chemicals to keep the water clean and in balance, there is a natural way to do this. The tried and true method that most use is chlorine, bromine or a salt with chemical combinations. This is cheap and is very effective in keeping water clean and safe.

Manufacturers have now devised a natural way to keep pools clean. These natural chemicals are just as effective and do just as good of a job. Natural enzymes break down the bacteria or organisms, thus less chlorine or bromine is needed. Natural pool treatments are safer to handle and store. These natural chemicals are made from combinations of molasses malt and botanicals. These combinations of natural chemicals will break down materials and waste in the pool water such as, oils, lotions, hair, makeup, and environmental elements such as from cars. Algae can also be controlled using natural chemicals. Algae can form from any number of elements such as body fluids, rain, and cleaners. Harsh chemicals are what are used to remove algae. However, if the pool is maintained everyday and levels are checked there may not be an algae problem to deal with, so prevention is the cure. Natural chemicals are biodegradable allowing for less amount of chlorine or bromine to be needed.

Have a fun, exciting and safe summer with your above ground swimming pool. Remember to test water levels every day, and treat the water as directed per levels shown. This will assure that homeowners and their guests enjoy a crystal clear, pure, clean, and safe pool.

Get a water filter and reusable water bottle

Over 80 percent of plastic water bottles are tossed — not recycled — yielding 1.5 tons of waste per year, according to Mother Nature Network. Invest in a reusable water bottle (or two) and a filter.

(Tip from the Business Insider)

Clean green

If you’re planning to spring clean this month, try some eco-friendly products and methods.

Distilled white vinegar and water makes a simple all-purpose cleaner for windows and surfaces, she said. Cleaning products from brands like Seventh Generation and Dr. Bronner’s are natural, organic or vegan.

(Tip from Kentwired)

Keep your pets and your water clean

Properly dispose of your pets’ unused medication to ensure that they don’t end up in the local water supply.
Use safe methods for disposing of pet waste. Don’t use plastic shopping bags because plastic lasts forever and does not break down. Pick up after your pet using a biodegradable or flushable bag.

If you are a gardener, check your mulch. The cocoa hulls that are used in many mulch compounds can be toxic to pets if ingested. Lawn chemicals can also be toxic to both animals and people. Research gardening practices to find out how to reduce the amount of insecticides and herbicides you might need.

(Tips from the Examiner)

Green in the Bathroom

Going green in the bathroom can be very simple. Switch out conventional cleaning products with green products that aren’t harmful to the environment. Use hand dryers or a cloth hand towel that can be washed and re-used, instead of paper towels. Make sure the faucet is turned off completely and isn’t dripping. Fix leaky faucets and running toilets as these waste water that adds up over time.

(Tip from the Herald Standard)

According to the National Geographic, In 2012, Earth Day Network is asking people around the world to take the Billion Acts of Green pledge. Already, 980,878,787 people have participated in a green act, such as planting a garden or participating in an Earth Day event, according to the Earth Day Network website.

If you’ve ever traveled internationally to developing countries, most likely you’ve had at least one friend warn you “Don’t drink the water!” And they’re probably right. In most non-Westernized countries, access to clean drinking water can be almost nonexistent. The CDC recommends that when traveling abroad; if you are unsure about the quality of water, avoid it all together. So what else does an intrepid traveler need to be aware of when it comes to water safety? Following are a few of the top travel spots in the world and the diseases that can be found in their water supplies.

Mexico

For many Americans, out neighbor to the south is a great, and affordable, option for a vacation in the sun. However, in Mexico, and throughout the developing nations in Central America, the water can be difficult for our American sensibilities to handle. What I’m talking about, of course, is the dreaded “traveler’s diarrhea”. It’s so prevalent in Mexico that we’ve even coined another phrase for it, Montezuma’s Revenge. The most common cause of the problem is the ETEC bacteria that are consumed through tainted water. They adhere to your intestines where they release harmful toxins that cause both cramping and diarrhea. Although it’s not usually particularly serious, traveler’s diarrhea can obviously be quite uncomfortable.

Kenya

Kenya is the go to spot for seeing the wildest of Africa’s wildlife. With its arid savannahs and tropical coastline, Westerners flock here to enjoy the warm weather and see lions, giraffes and wildebeests, oh my! But Kenya is also home to microbes that can be just as deadly as an angry lion’s maw. Recent droughts have also made Kenya, and other African nations, home to multiple outbreaks of cholera. Cholera is a bacterial infection that affects the small intestine. Its symptoms, which aren’t pretty, can include painless diarrhea and watery vomiting. However, many people afflicted with the disease remain asymptomatic, that is, they show no symptoms associated with the disease. If not treated aggressively, cholera can quickly lead to severe dehydration, which can cause a body’s organs to stop functioning. If you suspect that you might have contracted cholera, the best option is to keep eating foods to clear out the intestines and replenish electrolytes and to seek medical care immediately.

Thailand

Westerners love the mix of cultural sites, jungles, and beaches that a trip to Thailand affords. In fact, the country is home to a burgeoning array of top-notch resorts and hotels, and many areas can feel just as developed as industrialized nations. However, Hepatitis A, a viral infection of the liver, is rampant in Southeast Asia so it’s important to play it safe and avoid the water in Thailand. Though Hepatitis A can be spread in a variety of ways, unsanitary drinking water is the number one cause of infection. Symptoms for the disease include painful, enlarged liver and flu-like symptoms. Though people infected with Hepatitis A can expect to recover, the process means up to six months of rest, avoidance of alcohol, and plenty of healthy living. There is a vaccination for the disease, which the CDC recommends for all travelers to Thailand, however up to 10% of those immunized can fail to respond to the shots, so stick to filtered water.

Without water, life cannot be sustained. Yet, many people view water as a source of danger. In ancient cultures, water was a dark and mysterious abyss. Just a few centuries ago, wives watched to see if their husband would return from voyages at sea. Today, water poses different sorts of dangers.

Contaminated water supplies cause many illnesses throughout the world. These largely occur in underdeveloped and developing countries, where the infrastructure to treat water is not yet installed. Yet, waterborne diseases are still found in the United States and other developed nations. Here are the most common waterborne diseases.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea, itself, is not a disease. Rather, it is a symptom of many different diseases, including the ones listed below. Everyone is familiar with diarrhea and can identify its watery discharge. It is so common, even in developed societies, that people rarely take diarrhea seriously. However, if left untreated for several days, diarrhea causes dehydration, possibly to the point of death.

Cholera

Cholera is one of the most notorious waterborne diseases. Haiti is still fighting massive outbreaks of this disease, well after its earthquake. Cholera is caused by cholerae bacterium, and its scientific name is vibrio cholera. In most cases, water sources become contaminated with cholera bacterium from fecal matter. In places where raw sewage runs into public water systems, this is a very common disease. Yet, the bacteria can also be found in remote water and even on coasts.

Aresenicosis

Arsenicosis is caused by drinking water with high arsenic levels over a long period of time. Unlike cholera, aresenicosis does not reveal itself quickly. Rather, people suffering from it will gradually show symptoms. According to the World Health Organization, arsenic levels in drinking water should not be higher than 0.01 mg. per liter. Aresenicosis ultimately can cause arsenic poisoning.

Hepatitis

There are several different strands of hepatitis: A, B and C. There is a vaccine for some forms of hepatitis, but not all of them can be vaccinated against. Hepatitis is well-known as an STD, but it also can be transmitted by food or water. If food or water is contaminated, then everyone who eats or drinks the contaminated source can contract hepatitis. This is why proper handling of food and washing hands is so important in the food service industry. However, a lack of knowledge and resources makes transmission much more common in underdeveloped countries.

These are four common waterborne illnesses. For the most part, people in developed areas can drink their tap water without worrying about contracting these diseases. Yet, they are quite common in developing countries. People traveling to areas with unsafe drinking water should understand the risks, as well as the measures that can be taken against them. Everyone, whether traveling to an undeveloped country or not, should partner with the World Health Organization and help underdeveloped areas get clean, safe drinking water.
